It was once said that Buffalonians know good music.  We are home to the famed Colored Musicians Club that routinely hosted jam sessions featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and (featured above) Boyd Lee Dunlop.  I had the pleasure of attending Dunlop's CD release concert at Hallwalls earlier this month (if the picture were a bit larger my head would be in the right hand corner behind drummer Virgil Day).  Dunlop's story is deep and endearing so I was pleased to be invited to attend by my favorite musician bass player Mr. Sabu Adeyola.  His talent is a vintage luxury.

Well another successful Black Friday has come and gone and Apple's Haberdashery was pleased to partake.  This is not because of the knock-down, drag-out scramble for deals, but for the more relaxed, way that our customers were afforded an opportunity to engage.  Although the necklace above was our one and only Black Friday promotion it was quickly scooped up by a member of reFashioner for a mere $220.  Compare that to the listed price by fellow vintage connoisseur CTVC who retails this piece at $400.

Bravo Network's Fashion Hunters-- A Woman About Town

Bravo Network's hit show Fashion Hunters features costume designer Rosemary Ponzo.  It seems that the shop keeper didn't know what to make of Rosemary but she quickly learned what a gem she had walk through her doors.  Rosemary is incredibly down-to-earth and has such an amazing sense of humor when it comes to wardrobe.  She is brave, talented and knowledgeable.  She has designed costumes for the mega star "purple rocker" PRINCE.

London Has Great Hats!

It seems that I picked the right time to visit London.  This fall had record breaking temperatures and lots of sunshine.  While perusing the vintage shops with a friend I was struck by the most clever and creative hats I have seen in a long time.  Brick Lane at the Old Truman Brewery has a best kept secret in fine millinery.  Edie Obilaso is a genius at making comical toppers for the perfect finishing touch to any ensemble.  I wanted the designer to pose for a picture wearing one of her creations but alas...she's camera.  I was invited to tour her East London Studio but my schedule just didn't permit.  Make no mistake this woman is gifted and she apprenticed under the best in the business including a woman who makes hats for major motion pictures and other important stuff!  I Love London and I love my new hat.

In April, I wrote a post entitled "Great Minds Collect Alike" and it seems that the vintage provider for the First Lady Of The United States, Mrs. Michelle Obama and I share a similar aesthetic when assembling our collections.  A branch-like goldtone ring with a turquoise colored cabochon was featured in Apple's Haberdashery's Holiday 2010 collection and, as difficult as it is, Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection carries the exact same ring.  Even more interesting is that this necklace (featured in Apple's Haberdashery's Fall 2010 Catalog) is also available in Ms. Tanenbaum's collection of rare pieces. Go figure.

Apple's Haberdashery Presents: Clothesline TV on Youtube



In June, Apple's Haberdashery will premire Clothsline, a series of 30-second video spots on Youtube featuring yours truly.  Clothesline presents quick tips and information on vintage and contemporary fashion that are easy to digest...cause let's face it Youtube is fun.  I'll be posting the link soon. in the meantime check out the opening credits.

On the second floor is the Kittinger Galleries master bedroom designed by Karen Bialkowski. One of the most unique decorating features of this room is that the king size tufted bed is in the center of the room, making it the room's focal point. This works very well because the high headboard of the bed gives a discreet sense of privacy to the door less dressing area nook behind it. The bed is adorned with silk linens and above it is an ornate gold-leafed lighting fixture. The room is graced with beautiful Kittinger furniture and would be very inviting at the end of a long day. There is still the original intercom system in the corner of the room where, one can imagine, owners would call down to the kitchen for their morning coffee and breakfast.


The dressing room nook was designed by the Villa Maria College Interior Design Program. Constance Strothers, one of the members of the Villa College team, described the Show House decorating experience as, "extremely exciting and challenging." In this way, the Junior League allows students to experience the real world of interior design. The vintage clothing hanging in the dressing room was provided by Allita Lee from her vintage clothing salon, Apple's Haberdashery.

Great Minds Collect Alike

Every now and then I visit both the physical and virtual vintage shops of my colleagues in the business.  Yesterday I browsed the website of vintage superstar Carole Tanenbaum whose client roster includes a name you may have heard before ummm...Michelle Obama.  Much of my collection is found in some of the most read wardrobe reference books available, and I am equally pleased when they appear in the curated collection of celebrated vintage enthusiasts like Ms. Tanenbaum.  I posted this ring in Apple's Haberdashery's Holiday 2010 collection.  As difficult as it is CTVC carries the exact same ring.
