Apple's Haberdashery Makes an Appearance at CEPA's Biennial Art Auction

Apple's Haberdashery discretely took center stage at CEPA's 9th Biennial Art Auction, allowing Dale Stulz's Auction Clerk to look like a piece of modern art. Executive Director Lawrence Bose remarked "You'll look great up front with Dale and the artwork...so 'mod' and so appropriate to the tone of the event!" For anyone eager to get a glimpse into the rarefied world of the fine-art auction, a trip to New York City is usually in order. But for the ninth version of CEPA Gallery’s Biennial Auction, those high-profile bidding wars came to Buffalo.

CEPA Director Lawrence Brose, who touts the event as the only professionally run art auction in Western New York, attributes its ongoing to success to Dale Stulz, a former auctioneer for Christie’s auction house in New York City and the founder of its now-prestigious photography department. Stulz was involved in appraising the artworks for sale and will preside over the April 26 event. Works to be part of the auction will be on view at CEPA beginning Saturday.

But auctioneer star power isn’t the only draw. This year, the auction features a number of rare, important (not to mention pricey) works, most prominent of which is a small male nude by Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer famous for his black-and-white portraits of Patti Smith and Andy Warhol, and his controversial and sexually charged body of work.
